משמעות השם מטאורה ביוונית הוא "מעל השמיים". נזירים החלו לבנות את המנזרים בראשי הצוקים, החל מהמאה ה-11.
כיום נותרו במטאורה שישה מנזרים בלבד. המנזרים הבנויים על צוקי הענק ונצפים מהתצפיות הפזורות לאורך הכביש המתפתל בינהם. ישנם מספר נקודות תצפית לאורך הכביש המקיף את המנזרים.
המנזרים התלויים של מטאורה הם פלא עולמי שאסור לפספס. מדובר במנזרים שממוקמים על צוקים גבוהים, מה שמייצר נופים עוצרי נשימה וחוויה ייחודית.
המנזרים משמשים עד היום כמרכזים דתיים פעילים. הביקור כולל סיור בין מספר מנזרים, חלקם פתוחים לקהל הרחב, ותצפיות מדהימות על הנוף ההררי מסביב.
